J. S. Chapman

J. S. Chapman is a paperback writer, recovering screenwriter, genre shifter, and research glutton. She’s written thrillers, mysteries, historical fiction, romantic comedies, and nonfiction. \n\nAs a semifinalist in the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting—sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—she came close to being a winner by a mere 31 places. Put in context, those 31 places mean something when thousands applied that year, so she’ll accept the bows and kudos with utmost humility. \n\nHaving almost sold a script to the Hallmark Channel until the producer found it too risqué, she switched to writing novels and became fascinated with sociopaths, murderers, action heroes, 12th-century knights, and people living in glass houses. \n\nShe’s the proud recipient of an encouraging rejection letter sent to her by George R. R. Martin, then producer of a hit TV series. One day, when she was sick of looking at her thick pile of rejection letters, she threw all of them away. Months later she realized that her most prized rejection letter had been tossed out with the rest. If she still had Mr. Martin’s letter, it would be preserved in a hermetically sealed frame.\n\nYou can take the girl out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the girl. Born and raised in Chicago USA, she may be a suburban transplant but her heart still lives in the Windy City, where she learned her street smarts the hard way. \nAfter earning her degree from Northwestern University, she briefly taught in the Chicago Public School system before signing on with the corporate sector.
